President's Message:

Hello everybody,

We all mourn the passing of Dorothy Morton.  She was a wonderful lady and a valued member of the club.  She was a treasure trove of knowledge and will be missed very much.

I will bring up at the next meeting that there is an asterisk behind the names of lifetime members on our membership list. That way, there will be no question each year when the membership list is printed up as to who the lifetime members are. Ron Mackelprang, Al Malmstrom, Tami and I are all lifetime members.  I would also like to nominate Susan Theis, Dorothy Morton’s daughter, as a lifetime member, as well as Gloria Otto and the owners of the China Wine Cup claim. We can discuss this at the meeting.

Next month is our election and I cannot stress HOW MUCH you need to volunteer to run for president, vice-president, treasurer, and secretary.  This is a voluntary club, it is incumbent on every member to volunteer at one time or another to help the club as a whole.  Tami and I personally want to be just regular club members.  We want to pan, dredge, and do whatever club members do without the responsibility that being an officer incurs.

Al Palin, President.

IGPA minutes 02/08/2005

The meeting was called to order by president Al Palin. There were 65 present. He greeted the members and guests. Larry Steele welcomed the new members. The minutes were approved as printed in the newsletter. Rodney Poe gave a treasurer’s report. There is $2882.14 in the checking account, $625 in the Miss Lucy Bond, $50 in petty cash, for a total of $3557.14. Al asked for volunteers to help serve on the nominating committee. Art Shandera, Al Malmstrom, and Ron Mackelprang volunteered. These people will call club members and see who is willing to be a candidate for the four elected offices: President, vice-president, treasurer, and secretary. The committee will give a report at the March meeting, and the candidates will be listed in the April newsletter in preparation for the April elections. There was a long discussion about water rights for the Miss Lucy. Ed Liddiard said we needed to see if we can purchase water rights from someone above our property. The Idaho Department of Water Resources has maps that would show who has rights above our claim. Del has a printout of who all has water rights on Grimes Creek, he’ll bring it to the next meeting. Al talked about an e-mail he had gotten from someone with a new design for a gold pan. The annual treasure hunt is at Farragut State Park in Athol, Idaho, June 17-19, 2005. Gary Armstrong printed up the new claims guides for which we’re grateful. Thanks also to Ron Mackelprang for compiling this claims guide. We discussed the Hannah One claim. Rob Robinson said he hasn't heard from the people who supposedly co-filed on it. It was decided that it was okay to use this claim. There was another long discussion regarding water rights. Brian Goffin will talk to Oscar Baumhoff about buying some of his water and possibly trucking it up to the Miss Lucy claim. The raffle was held. The president’s drawing was won by Jim Jenks, who will provide the treats for the March meeting. The following prizes were donated by the following people:
Chuck Knapp..................Snuffer bottle
Al Amos..........................Flashlight/knife
Rodney Poe.....................Calendar
The 50/50 drawing was held, and someone won $61 (sorry, I didn't write down who won this). A motion was carried to provide lifetime memberships to the club for Al and Tami Palin. Al reminded everyone that the auction is upcoming in May. The annual Gem Show is the weekend of February 26-27. There was not sufficient interest to staff a booth for this. There was a long discussion regarding the club website. Rod Kost will do some research and report back at the March meeting. It was announced that the annual Salmon outing will be held July 8-10. This is for GPAA members only, but is well worth the trip. The schedule will be updated on the club website. It was announced that we are now officially a nonprofit club, thanks to Rodney Poe. The meeting was adjourned. Respectfully submitted,

 Tami Palin, Secretary

I want to send my condolences to Dorothy Mortons' family and wish you comfort in your memories. We are all going to miss Dorothy. God Bless

The officers’ election will be held next month. The nominations will be announced at the March meeting. The club made no major purchases in February. "FYI" The By-Laws allows each officer to make purchases up to $50.00 each month without a club vote for things that may come up during the month.

Here is some information about an enemy of the Mining Industry and the Small Miner. The Western Mining Action Project is an organization that is based in Colorado. It is no secret that this group is a coalition of environmental organizations that have come together for the single purpose of eliminating all mining within the public lands of AmericaThe Bullitt Foundation  http://www.bullitt.org

JUST SOMETHING I FOUND:
I found an article in the March 2, edition of the Idaho Press-Tribune. The Boise (AP) article "Mine owner: EPA study flawed" The owner of the Bunker Hill Mine in Kellogg (a super-fund site) claims a 1998 EPA study conducted by the US Bureau of Mines used "synthetic mine water" to study how best to clean up the area laden with heavy minerals cost millions of dollars unnecessarily. The EPA could not get water from the actual mine, because the discharge ditches were dry at the time.  They made their own sample by dissolving chemicals to create a solution to study. If the EPA would have stuck to its original 1992 decision to use wetlands filtration to clean the water, the mine could have gone back into production years ago.
